The Power of Partnerships

It’s no secret that America is becoming increasingly diverse each year. In fact, in some areas, culturally diverse groups now account for the majority of births. And yet, the number of those who are aware of how their ethnicity factors into their overall risk for serious eye health issues remains low—a missed opportunity to catch the attention of these groups, and connect with them on steps they should be taking to protect and preserve their vision.

You might have heard that this is Hispanic Heritage Month—a celebration of the culture and traditions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain and the Spanish-speaking nations of Latin America. But, even as we come to the end of this celebration, we should understand how their dynamic growth and particular demographic characteristics make Latinos an increasingly important segment of the U.S. population—and how serving this community represents exciting opportunities for eyecare professionals.

Making Eye Health a Priority for Latino Families

A belief that the family is at the center of community and society is a well-accepted cultural characteristic of the Latino population in the United States. Hispanics, many of whom are first or second generation immigrants, still tend to have larger families, and moreover their conception of "family" tends to encompass an extended number of relatives, to one that easily includes not only grandparents, but also aunts, uncles and cousins.
