Fall Into Education: Encourage Hispanic Americans to Focus on Their Eyes During Hispanic Heritage Month This Autumn

The Latino Opportunity

On October 14, 2014
You might have heard that this is Hispanic Heritage Month—a celebration of the culture and traditions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain and the Spanish-speaking nations of Latin America. But, even as we come to the end of this celebration, we should understand how their dynamic growth and particular demographic characteristics make Latinos an increasingly important segment of the U.S. population—and how serving this community represents exciting opportunities for eyecare professionals.

I’d be more surprised if you didn’t – considering Hispanics make up the largest ethnic minority group in the United States, with their growth outpacing the general population. But while the Hispanic population is large, it is not homogeneous. Depending on where your practice is located, you may serve Hispanic patients that belong to one or more different subgroups. While Hispanics, in general, share a common heritage and many cultural preferences, it’s important to recognize that there are differences among subgroups that could impact the way you communicate with your patients.
