As a nurse educator and cultural diversity trainer, I’ve found that in order to provide the best care – particularly to diverse patients – it can often be as important to collaborate with experts in other fields of practice as it is with your own colleagues. With so many overall health issues having ocular side effects, collaboration with eyecare professionals is imperative.

I recently read that the number of nurses (and all health professionals) who smoke has declined. It got me thinking about what messages we send our patients through our own healthy (or unhealthy) habits. While I’m pleased to see this statistic decreasing, it’s still disconcerting to observe fellow health professionals make ill-advised decisions for their own health. I’m talking about the trauma surgeon who rides a motorcycle without a helmet, the dentist who rarely flosses, or the dietician who consumes excessive junk food.

It’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, UV Awareness Month and Better Hearing and Speech Month.
